Standard Motorcycle Test
Pass your test on a 125cc motorcycle and you are entitled to a full licence that is restricted for two years to motorcycles with a moderate power output (25kW or 33bhp). After two years this restriction is automatically lifted and you will be allowed to ride a motorcycle of any size.
Note that the restriction is one of power, not capacity. Any larger motorcycle can be restricted to 25kW. Realistically though, you are probably looking at something like a 250 four-stroke, an older 400 four-stroke or a derestricted 125 two-stroke.
If you are over 21, or reach 21 before the end of the two-year period, you can take the test again on a big bike. This is known as Accelerated Access and the same rules apply as for Direct Access.
Direct Access Motorcycle Test (DAS)
If you are aged 21 or over, you do not have to take the test on a 125cc machine. You have the option to side step the power restriction by passing your test on a large motorcycle (over 35kW or 46.6bhp). This is called the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) and gives you direct access to an unrestricted licence.
